“THE FEMALE SPIKE LEE,” SONJA DUNSON, RELEASES MUSIC SOUNDTRACK FOR “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE”

SONJA DUNSON(LOS ANGELES) – Renowned longtime film and TV star Sonja Dunson (‘The Female Spike Lee’) releases “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE,” the companion seven-track music soundtrack to Dunson’s similarly-named, to-be-released movie. Set in Detroit, “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” is, in Dunson’s words, “an interracial love story triangle” in which the principals are a Black woman from a well-to-do family and a White male. “The parents disinherit her because (he’s) poor, not because he’s White,” explains Dunson, whose impetus for creating “YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” was “to portray the upper-class Blacks.””

One of Hollywood’s earliest successful Black film and television stars, Dunson has a distinguished history in Tinsel town. The former “Miss Michigan Universe” winner was a regular on three long-running television series – “Lohman & Barkley,” “D.A.” and “Emergency,” and appeared in over twenty commercials while being represented by the prestigious William Morris Agency.

Indeed, Dunson earned over 2 million dollars before the age of 24! In 1977 Dunson created and published BLACK HOLLYWOOD, which was the only Black casting magazine for actors and actresses of color.

“YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” – shot in 35 mm – was created on a budget of $120,000 which Dunson obtained via a grant from the U.S. Small Business Administration – one of only two producers to ever be funded for a motion picture. It took the ambitious Dunson less than a month to be approved by the SBA, which underwrote the movie project. A prolific writer, Dunson wrote the title track on “YOU CANT BUY LOVE” as well as co-wrote another song in the movie and on the soundtrack, “So Much Feeling In Your Love.”

“YOU CAN’T BUY LOVE” REVIEW COPIES AND SONJA DUNSON INTERVIEWS AVAILABLE.

What are you listening to?

The diversity of music that can often be found on a person’s iPod (or mp3 player of whatever flavor) is endlessly fascinating to me. Some of my band members never fail to surprise me with their new discoveries, which are usually WAY different than the music we write and record. I guess that ‘s the beauty of music, you never know who it will reach.

I’m often asked about what I’m listening to, so here are some of the recent additions to my iPod; no real surprises this week, but you never know when I’ll pull out something unexpected…

Keith Urban: Kiss A Girl, Sweet Thing, Standing Right in Front of You (all from the new Defying Gravity CD). The entire disc is really terrific; highly recommended!

Darius  Rucker: Don’t Think I Don’t Think About It, Forever Road. Darius’s voice is like an old friend. I saw Hootie & the Blowfish play early in their career and it’s been fun to watch his country transition.

Sheryl Crow: Love Is All There Is, Love Is Free. Love her — enough said!

I’d love to know what YOU’RE  listening to these days. Shoot me your playlist and I’ll post it here for some discussion!

Have a good one!

Happy Memorial Day!

I hope all of you are having a really great Memorial Day holiday! I am enjoying a relatively quiet weekend with my family.

And please take a minute to remember the reason for the day, the men and women of our miltary whose sacrifices have kept us safe.

Busy week this week and I’ll be posting more soon!

May is Mom’s Month

I’m excited to be launching The Music Mom blog in (what’s left of…) the month of May. Mom’s month!

It’s good to see that Mother’s Day is becoming more eventful than the perfunctory afternoon brunch. Here are some of the more interesting Mother’s Day promotions I came across this year.

Show us your ink. KFC wants to see your mommy ink!Well, for starters, KFC did something different for moms. Their special Mother’s Day promotion awarded a $10 gift card for free food to persons who sent in photos of their “mom tattoo.” No ink yet? No problem. They even provided a temporary tatoo cutout on their site so everyone could play.

Speed up your mom. Brain Fitness for MomsIf tattoos aren’t your thing, there was the special offer on Brain Fitness software from the folks at Posit Science. I love this quote from their site: “Give your mom a gift that can improve her memory, enhance her ability to focus, and speed up her thinking.”  Nice!!

Rockin' MomsMothers with loud guitars. But it’s the Rockin’ Moms in San Jose who got it right this year with their Mother’s Day Celebration concert at the Landmark Ballroom. The show featured Rockin’ Moms founder Tiffany Petrossi’s band and a half dozen other musical mothers doing their thing. They even had belly dancers. The event got  a ton of press and appears to have been a big hit, so rock on to the Rockin’ Moms!

If you haven’t checked out the  Rockin’ Moms site, by the way, definitely do that!  They’re even sponsoring a songwriting competition with $5,000 in cash and prizes, including a Daisy Rock electric guitar.

Whatever YOU did this Mother’s Day, I hope it was a good one and that you enjoy the rest of OUR month!
